I can’t believe after a year of being handed the keys to our very first DIY-project of a house, we are finally leading up to seeing our kitchen take shape. I never realised that quotes for knocking walls through and doing patchwork brick work would be so expensive before even starting on buying a kitchen and furnishing; at least in the Midlands anyhow. Both our parents, who live North, have laughed at what they thought were ridiculous prices and thankfully, have offered to put their skills forwards for this weekend coming (they direct, we’ll do the work).
The debate has been, do you use a stihl saw or a jiggerpick? And so, trying to make decisions, I’m on duty to call around for the best hire prices, which looks like Travis Perkins may start to be my second home.
Although we’ve got a good plan in place for the kitchen, we thought we’d make use out of Wickes‘ planning service who tightened up our sketch down to the last millimeters which the price came through at £9000.
This is something a little hard to digest at the minute as we still have a loft conversion to save up for altering it, but the service was great and hopefully we can revisit that shortly, but may have to settle for their off the peg range.
However, we think the layout you see is the best way to ultilise the space we have as I lot of kitchenalia and hopefully won’t need to have a clear out any time soon.
Also, as life’s a bit hectic at the minute, I’m still suffering with a 5-month-long back sports injury and after my first session of physio, I’ve been given three types of yoga-style stretches to do three times a day to loosen up my lower right (lumbar) spine for the next two weeks.
It’s apparently really stiff causing me quite some pain, so I’ll be ditching the running for a while and sticking to my given exercises and walking to avoid exacerbating my back any more until I see improvement. I’m truly looking forward to getting back to my usual active.
Then for a few little DIY treats, I managed to find a bargain £1.50 UV lamp in a charity shop for gel nail polish to revamp my battered nails and claw some femininity back in my life. I’ve been looking for one for months but didn’t want to pay much more on my nails as nothing lasts on them. When you’ve got paint on most of your clothes from renovating, it can be hard to snap out of a little complacency you’ve developed, not wanting to part with my favourite comfy skinnies, and as far as nails go, they’re quite camera shy when I’m filming a recipe. I’m quite a hands on person. So, to go with my lamp, I bought a 3 in 1 N.Salon purple varnish and UV gel cleanser to try which has worked well, but do need to wear gloves while washing the pots… but isn’t life too short for this? I’m hoping it’s just the polish I bought and not me, but it’s incredibly easy to apply and cure, so less daunting to fix.
My fiance also bought us three AVEX drinking bottles from amazon which arrived today with seal locks for easy travelling to keep by my side wherever I go or throw it in my handbag with hopefully no leaks. And I’ve been dying to shout out about my new cool £5 part-leather boots from my local market and were exactly what I’d been looking for. I was quite shocked to see H&M were charging £45 for plastic boots the other week and from the kitchen plans above, I’ve obviously needed to save money in other places, so this these are what I’ll mostly be wearing this season and love the interesting metal detail.
And finally, for a good night’s rest, we finally bought a new duvet cover ready for Christmas from Asda for £14 in a red tartan check and their 100% Egyptian 300 thread count fitted bed sheet for £13. I am a sucker for giving my dog comfort and don’t ban him off my bed, but that does come at a price in muddy Winter if I forget to close my bedroom door and so white is in no way practical or in any form around the house!
My house is a long way off being any kind of show home, but it’s great to see things starting to take shape!
Hopefully, if all goes to plan, our kitchen happenings will be in a vlog in the middle of November, so keep your eyes peeled or why not subscribe to my YouTube channel for an instant notification of when it’ll be up!
