Frylight - this isn't essential, but I like to spray the dishes to prevent the oat crumble from sticking to the insides of the pots
Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored & chopped. Or you can use cooking apples, Bramley apples, or a pink lady variety for extra sweet apples, etc
Lemon juice - this is to immediately drizzle on top of the chopped apples to prevent them from turning brown when hits the air
Ground cinnamon - to add cosy spices to the apples. Or you can use allspice
Natural granulated sweetener *must be counted. I like to use Whole Earth stevia as it has a more natural taste
Rolled oats - or jumbo oats as most of them will be blended into oat flour with some oat flakes left whole. This must be counted or used as allowance. Alternatively if not on a diet, you can use wholemeal flour for fibre
Low fat margarine - *must be counted. You can use cold and rub into the flour until you have chunky breadcrumbs or meltedin a medium saucepan over low heat
📋 Instructions

1. Pre heat oven to 160 c fan, 180c conventional, gas mark 4, or 350 F.
Then in a large bowl, mix the apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and half the sugar until combined and set aside.

2. Next, blend 75g of the oats in a food processor and place in a bowl while holding back the remaining 30g whole rolled oats.
Pour the melted butter into the oat flour and mix until you have a pebble consistency. Then stir in the whole oats and the remaining sugar.
OR: make your oaty crumble topping by rubbing cold butter with your fingertips until you have coarse crumbs.

3. Now spoon the apple filling into each glass baking dish.
Or if you like generous portions, bake in one large baking tin.

4. Then spoon your crumble mixture on top of the filling and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: Place your mini healthy apple crumble puddings on a baking tray. Not only are they easy to remove from the oven, but they will also help the apple filling chunks cook until tender.
👩🍳 Substitutions
Depending on your dietary needs, here are a few simple swaps you can make:
- Oat flour - ensure you are blending gluten free oats if needed. And if not following a special diet, you can swap for wholemeal flour for extra fibre, almond flour, plain flour, etc
- Sweetener - if preferred, you can swap some honey or low sugar maple syrup. Or if not on a diet, typically you would use demerara sugar, or light brown sugar
- Apples - you can use any type of apples or swap for pears and other fruits (see Variations)
- Low fat margarine - for an extra lean topping, you can use a splash of water with coconut oil, plant based butter, etc
- Lemon juice - swap for orange juice to support inflammation, such as arthritis

⚖️ Variations
Here are some different fruits you can enjoy with these healthy apple desserts:
- Apple and blueberry crumble - swap 1 apple for berries as they have a low GI (Glycaemic Index) meaning a lower sugar apple crisp
- Apple and pear crumble - swap half the apples for pears
- Christmas apple crumble - swap 1 apples for 100g of dried fruit and festive spices, or 100g ready made mincemeat
- Apple and strawberry crumble - swap 1 apple for 100g of chopped strawberries - it is absolutely delicious, although more expensive
- Apple and blackberry crumble - swap 1 apple for 100g of foraged blackberries in bramble bushes which you pick up for free in late Summer
- Apple pie - if not on a weight loss plan, you can swap the crumble topping for my shortcrust pastry without the cheese

❓ FAQ
Yes, you can make this apple crumble with Benecol margarine for a hearty option.
This no sugar apple crumble is packed with fibre, vitamin C, protein and potassium. They also contain antioxidants, which can help support inflammation to protect your cells from damage.
I prefer blending oats into oat flour as it is the closest thing to a healthy apple crumble. However, you can leave the oats whole (see below) for a crispy texture, but I prefer a mix of crisp and cookie dough texture.
Alternatively, you can use a mix of Ready Brek and oats.
