A deliciously sweet and warming apple and mincemeat Christmas crumble that's SO easy to make. Each mouthful oozes with festive spices, citrus and brandied mixed fruit from homemade mincemeat. It can also be made using a jar of mincemeat and a dash of Amaretto liqueur.

With Christmas just around the corner (and that I have a freezer full of apples), I've been obsessed with creating apple and sweet mincemeat recipe ideas.
I've also tried to be more resourceful in the kitchen making lockdown cakes, desserts and homemade Christmas apple fruit cakes as gifts. Oh, and I've LOVED making apple and mincemeat cakes.
So, here's my apple and mincemeat crumble. Or you could call it in the US, Christmas Crisp, similar to apple and mincemeat crisp. It's actually my classic apple crumble with eating apples with a jar of my homemade slow cooker mincemeat and a splash of Amaretto. I hope you think it's the best crumble for a Christmas family feast!

- Butter a large baking dish
- Then add the chopped apples and mincemeat and mix in a splash of Amaretto, then level with the back of a spoon
- Next, in a Kitchen aid, add all of the Christmas fruit crumble topping and mix until you get fine breadcrumbs
- Spread the apple crumble topping evenly on top and bake for 40 minutes and serve with custard.

What Type of Mincemeat Do I Need For Christmas Apple Crumble?
Homemade Mincemeat
It doesn't entirely matter which apple mincemeat you buy. Personally, I made it with homemade slow cooker mincemeat that works out cheaper, creating 6 luxury jars. *This recipe can be made in an oven, too.
Ready Made Jars of Mincemeat
As for jarred mincemeat, note that the cheaper ones tend to be more watery, but will thicken when everything's melted. You can also buy many vegan mincemeat in supermarkets. So by swapping the butter for vegan butter and check your sugars are vegan and alcohol too, you could make a vegan apple crumble very easily.
Boiling Quick Mincemeat
Or, as seen in my boiled fruit cake, you can make a quick one by simmering a quarter of the dried fruit ingredients before allowing it to cool.

Alternative Apple Crumble Christmas Ingredients
As mentioned earlier, I have a lot of frozen apples that need using up. I initially cored and chopped them into chunks without peeling. BUT, apples certainly aren't the only fruit associated with Christmas recipes.
Instead of an apple mincemeat recipe, you could instead, make:
- Cranberry crumble with apples
- Cherry apple crumble with a dash of sherry
- Canned fruit crumble
- Pear and blueberry crumble
- Apricot crumble
- Mixed berries crumble with cinnamon, nutmeg, mixed spice, etc
- Stir in diced marzipan
- Peaches
- Do a spot of foraging in hedgerows and make bramble crumble
Easy Crumble Topping Alternatives
An easy crumble topping would be to make an apple oatmeal crumble using oats, which is lighter.
Also, instead of regular butter in your crumble topping, you could use brandy butter instead.
If you wanted to make it more of a keto crumble, then you may want to try almond flour and nuts like almonds and walnuts milled.

Storing Your Christmas Apple Crumble Recipe
One thing that is key, is to allow your Christmas fruit crumble recipe to fully cool before refrigerating. This is to prevent bacteria.
I'll then cover with tinfoil and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Although, it ALWAYS gets eaten WAY before then.
To reheat, I place it back in the oven with tinfoil on top and bake for about 20 minutes at 160 degrees fan.
Can I Freeze Christmas Crumble?
Yes! I recommend to keep your Christmas crumble's shape, bake it in a dish that is also freezer safe as I do with my Denby one.
If you want to make it ahead prior to baking, you can do all the prep, then cover and freeze for upto 3 months.
What Apples Can I Use?
As you may already know, I used 500g of frozen then defrosted eating apples. *Remember when defrosting, apples lose their water weight, which you'll need to discard the juice, otherwise it'll be runny.
You can also use any other apples, such as fresh chopped eating apples or make it with bramley apples (AKA cooking apples).
What Size Baking Dish Do I Need?
For my apple and mincemeat crumble, I used a 23cm x 23cm baking dish. But you could easily make it with a 20 x 30cm baking dish too, which is approximately the same size as an A4 piece of paper.
Or, you could divide into 4 tin foil takeaway trays and bake as usual.
