A quick and delicious prawn bhuna recipe that's easy to make with pre-cooked prawns and dried herbs and spices. This easy prawn curry is also a keto friendly one pan wonder, which I show you with step by step images.

My all time favourite is a chicken bhuna curry whenever I order a takeaway. So it may come as no surprise that I'm also sharing a delicious shrimp bhuna.
Traditionally a bhuna curry is made by turning the onions, garlic, and ginger into a paste using a food processor first before frying.
But instead, I'm going to show you my much simpler way of making a prawn puree recipe. It's still as tasty, quicker and less washing up.

Equipment For This Shrimp Bhuna Recipe
You'll notice this shrimp bhuna recipe is an easy one pan wonder. Here's what I used to make it:

How to Make Easy Prawn Bhuna
Note, you'll find a printable list of my keto prawn curry ingredients towards the bottom of the page. But in a nutshell, here's what I do:
- Soften the onions, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper in the oil for about 5 minutes over medium
- Then add all of the spices and stir until everything's coated and fry while stirring for 2-3 minutes
- Add everything else except the prawns and butter and simmer and reduce over medium to high heat for 5 minutes
- Stir in the cooked prawns and cook for a final 3-4 minutes or until your desired consistency, then stir in the butter and lemon juice before serving

Can I Make it a King Prawn Bhuna Recipe?
Yes, absolutely! In fact, you'll find most Indian prawn bhuna recipes use king prawns. Personally, I find smaller cooked prawns cheaper and easier to source as I did with mine in the reduced aisle.
Can I Cook With Raw Prawns?
Again, yes! You'll need to take the time to peel and wash them, (which admittedly, I always find squeamish when they have eyes). Then cook them in the sauce for 10 minutes with the lid on. You may need to remove the lid to reduce after this time.
Tips for Cooking With Raw Rrawns
The key thing I find when cooking with raw prawns is not to overcook them as they can turn hard and chewy. It's not a pleasant experience.
How Can I Tell My Prawns Are Undercooked?
It's not a scientific way, but when cooking with raw prawns, they should start to curl into a C shape. Also, take a prawn out of the sauce and look to see if the line running along the back seems wide. If so, continuing cooking more.
Can You Freeze and Reheat Prawn Bhuna?
Yes. I normally freeze my bhunas for up to 3 months. Then defrost in the fridge overnight and heat in the pan until piping hot.
Or, if I'm in a rush, I microwave for 4 minutes in a lidded container with a vent, stirring half way through.

Keto Curry Side Ideas
As you'll notice, I enjoyed my keto prawn curry (or any homemade curry recipe) with a low carb sides. I know this isn't traditional, but I follow a low carb diet so my body doesn't turn it into fat. As for energy, I reward my body with healthy fats, like olive oil and butter.

Note, I find this way of eating far more satisfying than strictly eating a low fat diet. However, that being said, by swapping oil for Fry Light, it makes it instantly an unofficial Slimming World prawn bhuna.
If you're also following a Keto or 5:2 diet (associated with Dr Michael Moseley's Fast 800), then here are some other curry side dish ideas to enjoy with your healthy prawn meals:
- Stir-fried Mediterranean vegetables
- Leafy greens as a base to a healthy prawn salad
- Pan-fried kale
- Cauliflower rice
- Roasted vegetable
- Steamed vegetables

Love your recipes. Looking at some of your additional prawn recipes on page seem to come up as beef and chicken .Nevertheless, love your recipes. Thank you. X

Ah, sorry for the confusion! They're there so you can stir in cooked prawns in them instead of the meat I used!
