โ๏ธ Why You'll Love This Recipe
Here are a few reasons why we think you'll love this apple banoffee crumble:
- An easy recipe that anyone can make
- Cheaply made with simple ingredients
- Great recipe for using overripe soft bananas
- Easily adapted with vegan butter or coconut oil
- You don't need to get your hands dirty while making the crumb topping for apple crisp
๐ Ingredient Notes
Please see the printable recipe card with exact ingredient quantities and preparation instructions at the bottom of this post.

Fresh bananas - I use 4 bananas, but you can use whatever amount of bananas you wish if it means zero waste
Apples - I use Granny Smiths eating apples, but you can use Fuji, Honeycrisp, etc, or even Bramley cooking apples instead. These are cored and chopped into small chunks. Sometimes I don't peel them for a rustic apple and banana dessert as most of the nutrition is in the skin
Plain flour (all purpose flour) - with now rising agents, or you could use plain whole wheat flour for a mealier taste.
Unsalted butter - this can be cold butter to rub into the flour to make a fine crumb topping, or melted butter (see the video in the recipe card) for a quicker, pebble texture
Lemon juice - this is drizzled over the chopped apples in a small bowl to prevent them from browning
Caster Sugar (baking sugar) - as part of the dry ingredients for the crumbles' toppings. Use golden caster sugar if you prefer a richer colour
Soft dark brown sugar - for a toffee-tasting base of the banana and apple crumble
Cinnamon - for a warming spiced banana apple crisp
๐ Instructions
Here are my steps on how to make banana crumble with apples. Note, you can follow my video above if needed.
First, preheat your oven at 190 degrees Celsius fan / 210 conventional / gas mark 5.

1. Peel, core and chop the apples into chunks.
Then place in bowl and drizzle with lemon juice and set aside.

2. Chop the bananas and place in a large baking dish.
Add the apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

3. Stir while in the baking dish until well combined.
Then level with a spatula.

4. In a separate bowl, combine flour and sugar together for the crumble topping.

5. If using melted butter, stir into the flour mixture until you have small pebble-like crumbs, and break down any larger pieces with a fork.
For cold butter: rub it into the crumb ingredients with your fingertips or pastry cutter until you have crumbs.

6. Spread a layer of crumbs on top of the apple and banana mixture until completely covered.
Break down any larger chunks in the crumble mixture.
Bake your banana apple dessert in a preheated oven for 40-50 minutes until golden brown.
Tip: You can cover the crumble with foil halfway through baking if it is browning too quickly.

๐ฉโ๐ณ Substitutions
Depending on your dietary needs, here are a few simple swaps you can make:
- Apples - swap for pears, or create a mix for a tasty apple pear and banana crumble. Or, try other fruits such as rhubarb, blackberry, peaches, plums, blackcurrants or blueberries
- Flour - for a healthy banana crumble, you could swap for oat flour, or for low carb as I do in this unofficial Slimming World apple crumble, try a mix of coconut and almond flour. Use gluten free flour if needed
- Sugar - for low sugar, swap for natural sweeteners such as stevia, monk fruit, coconut sugar or honey, maple syrup, etc for a lower glycaemic index
- Butter - swap for coconut oil, or dairy-free plant based butter for a vegan banana apple crumble

โ๏ธ Variations
Here are some different ways you can enhance this easy banana crumble with apples for next time:
- Banana cake - make a banana crumb cake following this rhubarb crumble cake, but mash bananas into the cake mix instead of folding in rhubarb
- Apple and banana pie - swap the crumble topping for homemade shortcrust pastry
- Apple and banana muffins with crumble topping - grate 2 apples into these easy banana muffins and sprinkle the top with crumble mixture before baking
- Festive crumble - similar to this Christmas crumble stir in some zesty fruity mincemeat. If you can't find any in your local grocery store, you can make homemade mincemeat in a slow cooker
- Deluxe - add a little bit of vanilla extract or orange juice to the fruity base for extra flavour. You can also make a simple powdered sugar glaze to drizzle on top before serving
- Crunchy crumble topping - mix in some rolled oats to the crumble mix, and some pecans, almond slices or walnut pieces to toast while baking for extra crunch
- Chocolate and banana - mix in chocolate chips with the fruit. Then stir in some cocoa powder into the crumble mix and drizzle chocolate sauce on top before or after baking for a chocolate lovers touch

โ FAQ
It is said that both toppings of a crumble and apple banana cobbler are quite similar, but a crumble is a breadcrumb topping, whereas a cobbler is more like a biscuit topping.
This is not surprising because English settlers in North America were not able to make suet pudding, hence a cobbler was invented.
But they are both baked in the same way, with a fresh fruit base without pie crust on the bottom. You'll often find oats mixed in to form an apple banana crisp. There are just SO many variations, it's that versatile
Yes, you can use canned or frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit. I recommend draining canned fruit first, or stirring in 2 tablespoon of flour if it comes in syrup.
As for frozen fruit, I recommend thawing first, or baking on a lower temperature for longer.

Thank you for the recipe, it turned out great! Such a simple and tasty way to make use of some sad leftover apples and bananas I had at home. Since it is getting closer to Christmas, I added more spices: cardamum, nutmeg and vanilla paste. Served with plain yoghurt as it was all I had at home. Used wholemeal flour in crumble and loved it. Maybe I would reduce the amount of sugar a bit but definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing!
