The easiest puff pastry mince pie recipe you'll ever make that doesn't require any skill. These vegan mince pie pinwheels are also quick with ready-made mincemeat and ready-rolled puff pastry. But I'll also show you how you can add other mince pie filling alternatives. Includes how-to video to follow long!

Most years, I make these easy mince pies, also known as sweet pinwheel mince pies in the form of Danish pastries. In fact, I'm in complete shock that this recipe wasn't even on my blog as I'd filmed it years ago. It was have been a busy Christmas(!)
I made this year's mincemeat roll for a friend one evening (and last minute), so I promise I'll take some nicer pictures in the future.
But I'm sure you can get an idea quickly with my step by step pictures of how to make this mince pinwheel recipe in a jiffy. They completely go against traditional shortcrust pastry mincepies and are a doddle to make.
So, let's begin.

Tools Needed for Making Mince Pies With Shop Bought Pastry
- Silicone baking mat - or baking paper/nonstick baking tray
- Baking tray
- Pastry brush
- Chopping knife
- Rolling pin
I know that not everyone will have a silicone baking mat, but nothing sticks to it and it can be thrown in the top shelf of a dishwasher.
You can see me use it to bake homemade pizza, cheesy bread, dirty fries, cottage cheese scones, Christmas fruit shortbread biscuits, and more. It's well worth the money.

Ingredients
Note, you'll find a printable recipe card for the puff pastry mince pies towards the bottom of this page.
Makes 12 Mincepie Pinwheels
- 375g ready-rolled puff pastry sheet at room temperature. *Using both sheets of Pepperidge Farm (17.3 oz) with more mincemeat is fine
- 411g jar of mincemeat (slow cooker mincemeat works too). *This is just over half of a 27 ounce NONE SUCH Ready to Use mincemeat jar
- 50g (¼ cup) caster sugar (baker's sugar)
- 20g (2 tbsp) chopped nuts to decorate *Optional
- 1 tbsp water / brandy or apricot jam is fine if you have any left from icing a Christmas cake
- First, sprinkle the caster sugar on a clean surface or large silicone making mat if using
- Unroll the sheet of puff pastry on top of the sugar and use a rolling pin to make it a bit longer and wider in length
- Spread the mincemeat on top, leaving a 2cm border all the way around
- Fold over one of the longest edges by an inch, then roll it up tightly by hand, or you could use your silicone mat to help, BUT...
- Once you get to the other 2cm border, brush it with milk or water, then finish rolling it up
- Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour to firm up (or longer if you wish!)
- Meanwhile, preheat your oven at 180c fan/200c conventional/Gas mark 6/400 F
- Remove from the fridge, then slice into 12 to 14 slices, approx 2cm thick
- Flip them on their sliced sides, preferably spaced apart if you have room and press down to flatten with your hands
- Sprinkle the chopping nuts if using and bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until golden and eat warm or cold

Tips for Buying Ready Made Mincemeat
Try to buy the best mincemeat you can afford where possible as the cheaper ones (as shown in this mince pie pinwheel recipe) are a bit more water.
If you can't find a luxury mincemeat in your local shop, you could reduce the mincemeat down by simmering for 8 minutes as I do in my cheat's easy mincemeat Christmas cake recipe. I didn't bother as they still turned out great, but they may leak when baking.
Can I Make These Mince Pies Vegan Pinwheels?
Yes! In fact, these were accidentally vegan mince pies as I used vega Jus Rol ready rolled puff pastry, which is made with vegetable fat. And so was the mincemeat I used.
I've baked with a lot of vegan mincemeat this year which were Sainsbury's luxury mincemeat and Tesco's own brand non-luxury mincemeat.
Tip for Vegan Sugar
The way sugar is sometimes processed is not always vegan, so make sure you check the label.
Homemade Mincemeat Recipes
Alternatively, if you can't get hold of jarred mincemeat due to the country you live, or lockdown reasons, then you can:
- Make a 10 minute mincemeat by boiling raisins, currants, brandy, sugar, citrus and butter together as shown in my Christmas boiled cake recipe
- Make 4 jars of your own luxury homemade slow cooker mincemeat using suet pudding or butter or in the oven
What Else Can I Use Instead of Mincemeat?
If you don't like mincemeat filling as I know some don't, some other alternative puff pastry and mincemeat recipes for sweet or savoury pinwheels:
- Chocolate pinwheels using Nutella spread (and with some dollops of peanut butter which is amazing from experience)
- Tuna pinwheels
- Pecan pinwheels
- Cinnamon pinwheels
- Ham and cheese pinwheels
- Puff pastry cream cheese roll ups
- Sausage pinwheels, by spreading 1 pound of sausage meat on top and rolling up
- Cranberry feta pinwheels

How Long Do Mince Pie Pinwheels Keep?
I would advise to store them in an airtight container for up to a week. When I give them away, I usually make them no longer than couple of days before gifting and place them in a food bag.
However, if you wanted to make mince pies ahead of time, you can do all the prep, then flash freeze them for 1 hour on a sheet before placing them in a freezer bag. This prevents them sticking to each other.
Baking Mince Pie Pinwheels From Frozen
I've never baked these easy mince pies from frozen, but I can imagine they're exactly the same as when I bake frozen croissants and Danish pastries. What I would do is:
Preheat my oven at 200°C conventional / Fan 180°C / Gas 6 / 400F.
Place the puff pastry mince pies on a lined baking sheet or silicone mat spread apart slightly and bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
