Wheat flakes - use any of your choice. I use Toasted & Malted Wheat Flakes by Whole Food Earth from Amazon (affiliate) or have previously used Bran Flakes
Rolled Oats - these are plain raw oats or instant porridge
Raisins - these are dried raisins, or use any dried fruit such as apricots, cherries, sultanas, chopped dates etc.
Powdered milk - I used skimmed milk powder which is optional, for an extra creamy taste, but is also in this recipe to add a snowy effect on the fruit
Roasted sliced nuts - these are sliced almonds and hazelnuts, but can be omitted or swapped for any you desire
Optionals - I eat Alpen No Added Sugar as the fruit is sweet enough, or simply add sugar to the mix as desired, or just before serving

👩🍳 Substitutions
Depending on your dietary needs, here are a few simple swaps you can make to this homemade muesli recipe:
- Oats - Swap for barley flakes or certified gluten-free oats
- Nuts - If you're allergic to nuts, fear not! Replace almonds with sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds. If no allergies, you ,ay prefer to use sesame seeds
- Dried Fruit - swap for fresh fruit if desired such as blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, grated apple, etc
- Milk - for a vegan homemade museli recipe, swap powdered milk for plant based the next day of serving, such as oat, coconut or almond milk
Note: you may prefer making this bircher muesli or overnight oats recipe in the slow cooker.

❓ FAQ
Alpen, born in the UK in 1971, was inspired by muesli. It's a cereal blend of toasted oats, nuts, and dried fruits.
Absolutely! Alpen can easily be vegan-friendly. Just ensure you use plant-based milk (like almond or oat milk) and skip the honey if you're following a strict vegan diet.
Alpen is rich in essential vitamins (like B vitamins) and minerals (such as iron). It's high in dietary fiber, promoting digestive health. It is also low in saturated fat, salt, and cholesterol, making it a smart choice for overall well-being. However, be mindful of what sweetness you add to it if you are diabetic.
